BALATON – Services for Elmer G. Swanson, 90, of Balaton will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Balaton Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Almlie Funeral Home in Balaton, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and continuing one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery, with a luncheon served in the Balaton Community Center immediately following the burial.

He died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at his home.

He was born June 19, 1922, to Swan and Iola (Ramsey) Swanson in Garvin.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 12, 1944, and served in the 63rd Infantry Battalion. He was overseas in the Pacific Theatre when he was wounded in the line of duty near Luzon, Philippines, and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 31, 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Balaton; four sons, Daniel Swanson of Janesville, Bradley Swanson of Savage, John Swanson of Tracy and Duane Swanson of Long Prairie; one daughter, Janet Donner of Aitkin; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Swanson of Balaton; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
