CANBY – Mass of Christian Burial for Robert “Bob” Miller, 79, of Canby, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Craig Timmerman as the Celebrant. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Birk Funeral Home of Canby with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and a Rosary to follow. Visitation will continue from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home followed by procession to the church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Porter American Legion Post 457. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers to have memorials sent to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or Porter American Legion.

He passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013.

Bob was born Aug. 7, 1933, in Yellow Medicine County, the son of Ted & Regina (Bueltel) Miller. He attended grades 1-5 at St. Leo Catholic School and attended grades 6-8 at Porter Public School. In 1951, he graduated from Canby High School, where he was active in football & baseball. After high school he farmed with his father for one year by Porter, and then was drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1953. While he was in the Army, he served in Metz, France and was honorably discharged in June 1955.

Bob was joined in marriage to Gwendolyn Tibbits on Nov. 25, 1953, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church and to this union six children were born. Bob and Gwen farmed near Porter until 1991, when they moved to Canby and he began to sell real estate and was the deputy registrar. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, golfing and watching sports on TV. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and other activities and taking them hunting and fishing. Bob was a member of the Porter American Legion, Knights of Columbus and served on the Canby High School Hall of Fame Committee. Bob is survived by his six children, Greg (Karen) Miller of Sioux City, IA, Cindy (Jeff) Claeys of Porter, Brad (Joletta) Miller of Porter, Todd (Linda) Miller of Sioux Falls, S.D., Traci (Pat) Kieffer of Kimball, and Kelly (Tyson) Terhark of Horace, N.D.; 17 grandchildren, Steven Miller, Melanie (Rob) Lien, Daniel Miller, Patricia Miller, Derek Claeys, Ashley Claeys, Brandon Claeys, Brock Claeys, Joseph (Sara) Miller, Brady Miller, Jeremy Miller, Ryan Miller, Chad Miller, Scott Miller, Hayley Terhark, Tyler Terhark and Lexus Terhark; sister, Dorothy (Millard) Hayek of Canby; brother, Roman “Bud” Miller of Pompano Beach, Fla., and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gwen and sister, Grace.
