Tiger dance team gears up for home invitational Saturday
MARSHALL – Following the theme of “Rock the Dance Floor,” the Marshall Tiger dance team is ready to just do that at its hometown invitational.
The annual Marshall Tiger dance team invitational is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Marshall High School gym. Doors open at 10 a.m.
“This is usually our biggest fundraiser,” said Marshall dance team co-captain Marissa Schroeder.
The invitational will feature Class A and AA junior varsity and varsity kick and jazz teams from 17 schools.
Class AA teams Marshall and Willmar will kick off the action in the morning.
“It’s going to be a fast double-A performance,” said co-captain Hannah Enderson.
Schroeder and Enderson, along with co-captains Brittany Schultze and Claire Buysse, said the Marshall dance team has been doing well.
“So far this season, it’s been pretty successful,” Schroeder said.
Schultze said the goal for the Tiger dance team this year is to break into finals for kick and jazz at state. Schultze said Marshall’s scores are now what they were last year at state.
“We have a good chance of going far,” Schroeder added. “We’re starting out where we left off last year, if not better.”
Marshall’s varsity kick squad is performing to a “Phantom of the Opera” theme. The varsity jazz team dances to a “Stronger” theme.
“It’s a mix of songs with the word ‘stronger’ (in them),” Enderson said.
When school was out for the holidays, the Tiger Dance team did a bit of an overhaul to its routine, said head coach Andrea Schneier.
“Christmas break is always when we make our big changes to our routine,” Schneier said. January’s invitational is a way to see what works and doesn’t work with the changes. It’s a run-through before the team goes to Totino-Grace for the next competition on Jan. 19, said dance team member Katyln Beebout.
Saturday’s scores will also show how the Tigers will do for sectionals, Schneier said.
And the invitational features a large number of Class A teams, including Tracy, Canby/Minneota, Lakeview, Lac qui Parle Valley-Dawson/Boyd, Wabasso and Yellow Medicine East
The girls also said it’s always exciting to perform in their hometown. This year, there will be a captains’ room, dance team members said.
Schneier and the captains said the dance team parents play an active role in the invitational.
“They help plan for months in advance,” Schroeder said.
“The parents go all out with decor,” Schneier said.
“We all help set up,” Enderson said.
“They’re active in our sport,” Schultze said.
