Marshall wrestlers fall to Huskies, Trojans
It was a tough day on the mat for the Marshall/Lakeview wrestling team Thursday in Worthington. In a triangular against Southwest Conference foes Jackson County Central and Worthington/Round Lake-Brewster, the Tigers finished the day 0-2.
Jackson County Central, the No. 1 team in Class A, defeated Marshall 47-24 in the opening match, winning five of the first six matches. The Tigers’ lone win in the stretch was by Kesmond Willert, who took a 7-0 decision over Ryker Vanderwoude at 113 pounds.
Marshall’s next win came by forfeit at 145, then the Tigers got their first of two pins in the match when Brandon Appel took down Caleb Will in three minutes at 182 pounds. The Tigers’ Jared Holland won a decision at 195 pounds before heavyweight Austin Nath gave Marshall a strong finish with a pin in 41 seconds.
Facing one of the best teams in the state was a good experience for the Tigers, said head coach Justin Bouwman. He said it was the most points the Tigers had scored against JCC since he had become head coach.
“We did a lot of good things,” Bouwman said. “The kids had some good matches against some really good competition. It gave us that benchmark of where we’re sitting. Overall, I thought we wrestled fairly well.”
The Tigers lagged behind early on against Worthington/RL-B, as the Trojans picked up three wins right away.
Matt Facile stopped a string of three straight Trojan pins with a pin of his own at 126 pounds. Riley Roth followed with a pin for Marshall at 132, and Ramzi Gregoire also won by fall at 145. Worthington won five of the next six matches, however, before Nath won by forfeit at 285. The Tigers’ one win in the stretch was a 6-1 decision for Campbell Hofstetter.
“The Worthington one we kind of got shell-shocked right away,” Bouwman said. “They pinned our first three kids and we fell in an 18-point hole. Nick Erbes wrestled a good match against the fourth-ranked kid at 120 but the other guy pinned him in the end.”
