2 2nd-period goals lift Dragons over Tiger boys’ hockey
A pair of second-period goals for the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato boys’ hockey team sunk the Marshall Tigers in Litchfield on Saturday. The 2-0 loss for the Tigers continues a trend of win one, lose one following Marshall’s 3-0 victory over Worthington on Tuesday.
Aaron Haataja got the Dragon’s on the board 5 minutes, 33 seconds into the second period with an assist going to Mike Spreiter. Haataja would factor on the second goal from L/D-C, as he was credited with an assist on defenseman Garret Impola’s tally at the 9:07 mark of the same period.
Marshall (6-7-1 overall) had opportunities to cut into the Dragons’ lead, especially during a power play late in the third period. Kent Ryynanen was whistled for a hooking infraction at the 11:11 mark of the final period, but the Tigers were unable to take advantage thanks largely to the play of Dragon keeper Braeden Wahl.
Wahl stopped all 33 shots directed at his goal, picking up the shutout and the seventh win of the season for the 7-6 Dragons. He also managed to out-duel Adam Cavazos, making his second consecutive start in goal for the Tigers. Cavazos also stopped 33 shots, though in a losing effort.
The Tigers return home for their next four games, including three Southwest Conference games in a row. First up is a rematch with the Windom Area Eagles on Tuesday, part of a boys and girls double header at Lockwood Motors Ice Arena. Along with the Eagles comes Travis Janssen who is fifth in the state in scoring with 41 points and scorched the Tigers for four goals in Windom’s stunning 5-4 overtime victory on Nov. 29 in Windom.
