SMSU wrestlers drop dual to No. 10 MSU

The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team lost its third straight match to a ranked team within a span of eight days as No. 10 Minnesota State-Mankato earned a 25-9 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home win over the Mustangs Saturday night.

It was Mankato’s 23rd straight dual win over SMSU dating back to the 1991-92 season. The Mavericks move to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while SMSU falls to 11-5 overall and 1-4 in NSIC action.

SMSU lost the first four matches of Saturday’s dual. MSU got an upset win in that stretch as Alphonse Vruno knocked off fifth-ranked Justin Reinsma in a 3-2 decision at 133 pounds. It was just Reinsma’s second loss to a Division II wrestler.

Codie Lane got SMSU its first win at 157 pounds, defeating Sawyer Hoffman 4-3. The Mustangs’ Jacob Begin then got an upset win for his side when he beat No. 3 Cody Quinn in an 8-3 decision at 165 pounds.

Travis Peralta got SMSU’s only other win on the day, defeating Scott Van De Loo in an 8-2 decision at 184 pounds.
