New Ulm knocks Marshall out of 3A girls’ hockey tourney

The New Ulm girls’ hockey team proved why it’s the top seed in the Section 3A tournament Tuesday with a convincing 9-0 victory over fourth-seeded Marshall in the semifinals of the 3A playoffs.

The Eagles (13-10-1 overall) put 46 shots on goal to the Tigers’ 10 and got a hat trick from Brook Schugel, who scored the game’s first two goals in the opening period.

The Tigers (9-15-1) played New Ulm twice during the regular season, losing by a combined score of 15-0. Marshall head coach Kevin Schroeder said that despite the score, he felt his squad played better in the third and final meeting between the two teams this season.

“I thought we came out and started with real good energy,” Schroeder said. “It was the nine minute mark in the first period until they scored and I thought we did a good job getting forecheck pressure on them and getting it deep in their zone.

“I’ve got to give credit to our girls, they worked hard right up until the end against a team that’s by far the best in our section.”

The Tigers were playing without one of their top offensive threats in Megan Vogl. Schroeder said the squad went to Sara Antony, a sophomore defenseman, to take over Vogl’s role and he felt she did as well as he could have hoped considering the circumstances.

Marshall used both of its goaltenders to try to stand up to the New Ulm pressure. Morgan Morrill finished with 16 saves, while Sierra Wagner had 21.

New Ulm advances to play Luverne Thursday in Redwood Falls.

The Tigers graduate just two seniors from this year’s squad – Brooke Louwagie and Morgan Larsen – so Schroeder said the team will be looking to finish even better than its 9-15-1 record next season.

“It was a learning year for all of us,” Schroeder said. “We had some young kids and graduate just two, and we’ve got a good group coming up from the younger teams that will bring some talent. Everybody is already fired up to get to work to improve for next season.”
