Mustang wrestlers top Dragons 20-15
The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team wrapped up its regular season by defeating Minnesota State-Moorhead 20-15 Saturday in Marshall in the final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual of the year.
The match started with the 165-pound bout, where SMSU’s Jacob Begin, the fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation in his weight class, defeated Kerron Williams in a 7-1 decision. The Mustangs picked up three straight wins after that, with Kyle Begin winning a major decision at 174 pounds and Travis Peralta and Micah Larson earning decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, to give SMSU a 13-0 lead.
The Dragons picked up three straight victories after that and pulled to within a point after Philippe Walker won a sudden victory over eighth-ranked Justin Reinsma at 133 pounds.
SMSU sealed the victory with back-to-back wins after that, as Devin Terry won a decision at 141 pounds and Beau Buysse claimed a major decision over Casey Williams at 149 pounds. It was Buysse’s 13th dual win of the season.
SMSU is off until Feb. 24 when the Mustangs will compete in the regional tournament in Waterloo, Iowa.
