Former Minneota girl, MCC boy win Region 3A Triple ‘A’
Seniors Rachel Cheadle of Fulda High School, and formerly of Minneota, and Maxwell Whitehead of Murray County Central High School, have been selected to represent Region 3A in the Academics, Arts and Athletic Award program, Region 3A Executive Jim Lasley announced recently.
Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts and Athletic Award is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to the high school seniors with a “B” or better grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities.
Cheadle has been involved in fine arts activities and athletics including band, choir, volleyball and basketball. She has participated in numerous plays and had the lead role in the school’s musical this past fall. She has received “Superior” ratings in both band and choir at MSHSL solo and ensemble contests. She has been an all conference selection in both volleyball and basketball. Cheadle’s leadership skills are apparent as she has been captain of both volleyball and basketball, first chair in band and a section leader in choir.
Whitehead has been involved in fine arts activities. He has been involved in band, choir, speech and had lead roles in plays and musicals. Whitehead has been a three-time participant in the state speech contest, been involved in his school’s small musical groups and received “Superior” ratings in MSHSL solo and ensemble contests. Last year as a junior, he and his partner won the Section 3A and finished seventh in dramatic duo in the state speech contest. He has been a three-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track. This past fall he was an all-conference selection in football. Both Cheadle and Whitehead have been honor students, members of the National Honor Society and have been leaders and role models in their respective schools and communities.
Triple “A” Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the League’s member schools and administrative regions. League officials will announce the four state award recipients (a girl and a boy from a class “A” and Class “AA” school) at a banquet and an on court recognition ceremony at the state boys basketball tournament on Saturday, March 23. Each of the four award recipients will receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship.
Area Sub Region 3A “AAA” winners for 2013 are Maxwell Whitehead, Murray County Central, Sub Region 10; Isaac Josephson, Minneota, Sub Region 11 and Ellen Franta, Wabasso, Sub Region 11; and Rachel Cheadle, Fulda, Sub Regional 10.
