Reinsma, Begins named All-NSIC wrestlers
Three Southwest Minnesota State wrestlers were named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team, the league announced Tuesday. SMSU freshman Kyle Begin earned first team All-NSIC honors, while juniors Justin Reinsma and Jacob Begin were named to the second team.
In his first year with the Mustangs, Kyle Begin put together a 19-4 record and earned a berth to the NCAA Division II Championships. The Anoka native won the D-II Super Region 3 championship title at 174 pounds by going 4-0 in the tournament.
Reinsma, a native of Slayton, put together a 28-9 record at 133 pounds and earned seventh place at the D-II Championships for the second straight season, earning him All-American status. He is just the second two-time NCAA All-American in SMSU history, joining Link Steffen (1997 and 1998). Reinsma went 3-2 at the national tournament this year.
Jacob Begin, Kyle Begin’s brother, went 17-5 at 165 pounds and earned his first trip to the D-II Championships. He placed second at the Super Region 3 tournament.
Shamus O’Grady of St. Cloud State was named the NSIC wrestler of the year and Minnesota State-Mankato’s Alphonso Vruno was named the conference’s rookie of the year. SCSU’s Steve Costanza was named the conference’s coach of the year for the second straight season.
