Wabasso baseball team beats Springfield in opener

The Wabasso Rabbits baseball team received some help from its opponent en route to an 8-5 win over Tomahawk Conference rival Springfield in its season opener on Thursday in Springfield.

Springfield committed six errors in the game, including four in a five-run top of the fifth for the Rabbits.

Wabasso, likewise, had four errors in the game, but received a solid outing on the mound from starter Seth Guetter. Guetter allowed five runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched with a couple of strikeouts. Blake Altermatt closed out the game retiring the first batter he faced.

Altermatt and Guetter also did damage from the batter’s box. Altermatt went 2-for-4 in the game, with a triple and an RBI. Guetter laced a pair of singles on his way to a 2-for-5 game with an RBI.

The Rabbits (1-0 overall, 1-0 Tomahawk) are back in action on Monday as they host New Ulm Cathedral at 5 p.m. in Milroy.
