SMSU tennis earns split in final 2 NSIC matches

The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday night in Grand Forks, N.D., to wrap up its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season. The Mustangs topped Bemidji State 7-2 before falling to Minnesota-Crookston 6-3.

The Mustangs end the conference season 2-10 in the NSIC and 3-13 overall.

Against Bemidji State, SMSU won two of three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, SMSU’s Kayla Uphus and Allison Niedert earned an 8-5 win over Evan Kolberg and Nicci Hedtke. At No. 3 doubles, Hannah Hagen and Shelby Monahan won by default.

The Mustangs won six of the seven singles matches, two coming via forfeit. Katie Kienitz gave the Mustangs a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) win at No. 1 singles. Overbaugh added a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Hagen had a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No 4 singles match.

Against Minnesota-Crookston, Niedert and Ritter earned SMSU’s lone doubles victory with an 8-4 win. The Mustangs lost their first four singles matches before Ritter earned a 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 5 sigles. Uphus took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

SMSU will close out the regular season April 20 with a home match against Minnesota-Morris at the Marshall High School courts.
