Short takes for April 26

Outgoing trio made a difference with their work

THUMBS UP: We would like to recognize three individuals for the work they have done in their respective fields: outgoing Southwest Minnesota State University Interim President Ron Wood, long-time Marshall Schools employee La Oeltjenbruns and Ellie Beman, who along with her late husband, Don, purchased the Canby News weekly newspaper in 1992. Wood and Oeltjenbruns enjoyed their retirement parties Thursday, while Ellie Beman has turned the reins over to a new owner. Each of these people will be missed by a different community of people – Wood by SMSU, Oeltjenbruns by the school district and Beman by her readers in Canby and the surrounding area. We wish each the very best of luck in their new ventures.

Oaxaca excels

THUMBS UP: A major congratulations to Marshall High School’s Jessica Oaxaca, who not only became a state speech champion last week, but has also been awarded the Wells Fargo Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence by the Minnesota State High School League. The award program is part of the Spotlight on the Arts campaign, a program established by Wells Fargo and the MSHSL to increase awareness for high school fine arts activities.
