Young Lakers struggle against KMS?in opener

The Lakeview softball team had a rough start to its season Thursday in a matchup against defending Section 3A champion Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. The Fighting Saints piled up 26 hits in the doubleheader and rolled to victories of 18-1 and 19-1 on their home field in Murdock.

Samantha Dunn allowed just four Lakeview hits in Game 1 and earned the victory for KMS from the circle. She also had three hits and scored three runs.

Erin Haglund took over pitching duties for the Fighting Saints in the second game and allowed just one hit, which was from Lakeview’s Corbyn Lee. Haglund struck out 10 batters in the game.

KMS scored 11 runs in the first inning and eight in the second. Wee scored Lakeview’s only run in the first inning.

Kalli Forsell hit a home run in each game for the Fighting Saints.

Lakeview eighth-grader Sadie Stelter took the loss from the circle in both games.

MCC 18, Southwestern United 3

Murray County Central got off to a smashing start to its season with an 18-3 win over the Southwestern United Wildcats Thursday in a Red Rock Conference game played in Okabena.

The Rebels struck for nine runs in the first inning and piled up 15 hits for the game.

Lissa Carlson had a big day at the plate for the Rebels. She finished 3-for-4 with a double and two triples. She also had four RBIs. Taylor Schreier also had three hits, and Angela Dahlgren and Jade Giese each had two.

Ashley Clarke picked up the win from the circle for the Rebels. She held Southwestern United to three runs on just five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

MCC will be back on the road Tuesday with a Red Rock Conference game against Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

Area boys’ tennis

Wolverines slide past Sting, 5-2

Sweeping the singles matches, the MACCRAY boys’ tennis team defeated Yellow Medicine East 5-2 Thursday in Clara City in what was the Sting’s first action of the spring.

MACCRAY swept three of the four singles matches. YME’s David Nowacki pushed Brandon Wieberdink to three sets at No. 1 singles, but lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The YME No. 2 doubles team of James DeJager and Cody Speh defeated MACCRAY’s Aron Quilantan and Chris Preuss 6-1, 6-2. YME’s No. 3 doubles team of Ammon Bennett and Chris Zabel won by forfeit.
