SMSU soccer team signs a forward, 2 goaltenders

Southwest Minnesota State head soccer coach TJ Buchholz announced Wednesday that three student-athletes have signed letters of intent to continue their careers at SMSU.

The list of signees includes a pair of goalkeepers and a forward. The trio will be an addition to eight players that signed in February.

Denae Brooks from Spokane, Wash., and Brienna Dehkes from Elk River will both be looked upon to step in net for the Mustangs. Justine Hauck from Menifee, Calif., is expected to help bolster the team’s offense at forward. Brooks is a transfer from Peninsula College and Hauck is a transfer from Cypress College.

“All three have the ability to make an immediate impact on our team in the 2013 season,” Buchholz said in a press release. “Denae and Brienna are excellent goalkeepers that have a proven track record of success at their position. Justine is a very fast forward that has excellent ability to get around defenders with her speed. We are excited about adding these players to our team this fall as all three should fit very well into our style of play.

Brooks was named all-region in 2012 after recording eight shutouts with the Peninsula College Pirates, who claimed the programs first Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship with a 22-1-1 record.

Dehkes is a senior at Elk River High School and was an all-conference performer and team MVP as a senior, recording 90 saves. She is a three-year letterwinner and an all-conference performer in track.

Hauck scored four goals and had one assist in 2012 to finish fifth on her Cypress College team with nine points. She helped lead the squad to a 16-3-3 record and move on to the second round of the region playoffs in 2012.
