Yankees pick up wins over New Ulm, Willmar

Playing their first two games of the season, the Milroy Yankees picked up a pair of wins over the weekend by downing the New Ulm Brewers 12-2 on Friday and holding off the Willmar Rails 4-2 on Sunday.

Milroy pitchers Josh Hadley and Anthony Rohlik kept the New Ulm offense at bay on Friday, holding the Brewers to five hits. Hadley pitched five innings and earned the win, striking out four batters and giving up just one hit and one walk.

The Yankees struck for 11 hits in their season opener, with Eric Dolan going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Brian Dolan was 2-for-4 at the plate and knocked in a run.

Milroy got another strong effort from its pitchers Sunday against Willmar. Austin Deutz worked the first five innings and gave up two runs (zero earned) on just one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks. Nathan Deutz pitched the final four innings and gave up two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. He was awarded the win.

No Yankee player had more than one hit. Jesse Drager had the biggest hit with a two-RBI single in the seventh that gave the Yankees the lead.

The Yankees (2-0 overall, 1-0 Cornbelt League) are back in action Wednesday against Canby in Milroy.

Minneota 13, Tracy 2

The Minneota Mudhens jumped on the Tracy Express for 10 runs over the first three innings in a 13-2 win in amateur baseball action Sunday in Tracy.

Tony Shaikoski earned the win for the Mudhens, giving up two runs on five hits over five innings of work. He struck out five batters. Cal Swedzinski tossed the final two innings and held the Express hitless.

Phil Madsen was tagged with the loss and was pulled in the third inning. Greg Barnes went the next 3 1/3 innings and didn’t give up a hit.

Tyson Sonnenburg had a strong day on offense for the Express, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jason MacKinnon was 2-for-3 with a double, and Jason Myhre finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Aaron Ziemer was 1-for-3 for Tracy with a run scored, while Tylan Gylling and Andrew Suby each had an RBI base hit.

The Express (1-2 overall) resume play Wednesday with a game in Sacred Heart. Minneota (3-2) is scheduled to play the Adrian A’s Wednesday in Minneota.
