Panthers go 1-1 to open Section 3A-South playoffs

After breezing past Lakeview for a 5-0 win on Tuesday in Tracy, the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton softball team was tripped up by Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian 3-2 in the nightcap.

Tanner Gunnink drove in all three runs for Edgerton/SWC, opening the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first. Gunnink knocked in her third run of the game on a double in the third inning, finishing the game with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.

Tianna Top held TMB to two runs on three hits, striking out five and walking two in the upset.

Alyssa Campbell had two of the No. 1 seeded Panthers’ three hits in the game, while pitcher Jenny Welu took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Courtney Paczkowski and Alexis Buysse each had doubles in TMB’s 5-0 win over No. 8 seed Lakeview.

The Panthers return to action in an elimination game on Saturday in Cottonwood, though their opponent will be determined today as rain postponed Section 3A games in Dawson.

Lakeview ends its season with an overall record of 6-12.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton baseball outlasted Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 9-6 in nine innings in Lamberton on Tuesday. After the Falcons tied the game at 6-6 with lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, RTR waited until the top of the ninth to strike for three runs and claim the victory in their regular season finale.

Shay Wabeke was 2-for-5 with an RBI, a double and four runs scored for the Knights. He also gave up four runs in three innings pitched for RTR. Levi Hurst tossed a shutout inning of relief before Ryan Fischer threw five innings and picked up the win for RTR.

Brady Bierl allowed four runs over four innings of duty for RRC/WWG, though it was reliever Tyler Schoborg who took the loss after entering in the fifth inning. Henry Rogotzke had a double for the Falcons.

RRC/WWG falls to 6-9 on the season with the loss and plays next during the Section 3AA-North tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday against Benson in Marshall.

RTR (8-3 overall) faces Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian in the opening round of the Section 3A tournament in Windom on Saturday as well.
