Mudhens suffer pair of tight losses over weekend

The Minneota Mudhens suffered a pair of one-run losses over the weekend, dropping a 9-8 loss in 10 innings at Granite Falls and losing to the Milroy Irish 7-6 Sunday in Minneota.

Granite Falls rallied to score four runs over the seventh through ninth innings to force extras against the Mudhens Friday, then scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth to pull out the 9-8 win.

Cody Fruin and Aaron Zieske each had three hits for the Kilowatts, and Tyler Kanten was 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored.

Tyson Sonnenburg, Justin Greenwood and Jesus Macias all had three hits for the Mudhens in the losing effort. Minneota committed four errors in the game.

After getting 16 hits in the loss to Granite Falls, the Mudhens’ bats still stayed hot Sunday against the Irish, but 15 hits weren’t quite enough in the 7-6 loss.

Milroy scored five runs over the first two innings to take an early lead before Minneota came back to tie the game in the fifth. The Irish tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth innings and held on for the win.

Tyler Peterson got the start for the Irish and gave up six runs (four earned) on 14 hits. Luke Walling pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and earned the save.

Aaron Antony and Clay Ellis each had two hits for the Irish. Macias had a game-high three hits for the Mudhens, while Jason Myhre, Tony Shaikoski, Leo Zerr and Cory Drietz each had two hits.

The Irish (5-4 overall) continue play Wednesday at Worthington. Minneota (3-7) takes on Canby Wednesday in Minneota.

Wilmont 7, Tracy 2

Facing Wilmont for the second time in less than three weeks, the Tracy Express were unable to turn the tables against the Cardinals in Sunday’s rematch in Tracy. The Cardinals defeated the Express 7-2 after having earned an 11-0 win over Tracy on May 12.

Greg Barnes took the mound for the Express in what was his first start since he was in seventh grade. Barnes struck out nine batters and gave up five runs on four hits, four walks and three hit batters in five innings of work.

Blake Rogers, Steven Kremer and Lucas Henning each had two hits for the Cardinals in the win.

Tracy was led at the plate by Andrew Suby, who went 2-for-4.

The Express will try to get back on track Wednesday when they play at Dawson.
