Canby Hat Daze to include garden tour, movie in the park

Canby Hat Daze is quickly approaching.

The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. today with a Pork Producers supper and a self-guided twilight garden tour and will continue until 2 p.m. Sunday with the Canby Knights baseball game.

Jodi Olson and the two other master gardeners of Canby – Norma Dovre and Maynard Hughes – are the sponsors of the garden tour event.

“We came up with this idea 10 years ago as an event to add to the Canby Hat Daze,” said Olson. “This year we will have either three or four gardens in this self-guided tour. One is a raised vegetable garden, another includes a wonderful variety of trees, and lastly there will be a garden that consists of a new landscaping project. Each year we try to have different gardens, but there have been some repeats.”

“You can pick up your maps at Center Park with descriptions of each garden and where to go on Friday night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” Olson added.

The new events this year are the In the Park After Dark family movie and the Viking Age Club performance. The movie is yet to be determined but will be a fun family night to start off the summer celebration tonight.

Also from 4-9 p.m. Saturday, the beer garden will be brought back at the south end of Central Park. The Party of Five band will provide live music.

“One of the events people look forward to year after year is the fly-in on Sunday. Planes come in to give rides and then there is a free air show,” Cheryl Ferguson said. “Everyone is welcome, and there is something for everyone.”
