3 Tiger baseball, softball players earn All-SWC honors

The Southwest Conference released its list of all-conference players for spring sports on Friday and the Marshall baseball and softball teams each had three players earn All-SWC honors.

The Marshall baseball team, which finished in a tie for second in the seven-team conference, saw seniors Colton Peterson, Aaron Mathiowetz and Derek Buysse all earn All-Southwest Conference accolades.

Peterson had a .426 batting average and 16 RBIs for the Tigers in 2013. On the mound, Peterson tossed 24 1/3 innings and finished second on the team with 18 strikeouts.

Mathiowetz batted .406 for the Tigers and had a team-high 24 RBIs. His nine doubles were the most on the team and he hit for a .610 slugging percentage. Mathiowetz also led the Tigers with 28 innings pitched, posting an ERA of 4.00. His 27 strikeouts led the team.

Buysse ended the year with a .372 batting and had 18 RBIs. He also drew 12 walks and stole five bases.

Marshall finished the year 11-9 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

Luverne, which went 10-2 in the conference and advanced to the Class AA state tournament, had a league-high five players earn all-conference honors.

Marshall also had one player earn honorable mention status. Freshman Drew Hmielewski was the only underclassmen in the conference to earn postseason accolades.

In softball, Marshall senior Brooke Louwagie and sophomores Miranda Fischer and Callie Graff all made the all-conference team.

Louwagie, a shortstop, batted .584 for the season with eight home runs and 38 RBIs. She also had 10 doubles.

Graff and Fischer split pitching duties for the Tigers, with Graff going 5-7 and Fischer going 7-3. At the plate, Fischer batted for a .469 average and knocked in 16 runs. Graff hit .400 and had nine RBIs.

The Tigers went 6-6 in the conference to tie for third place. Their overall record was 12-10.

Marshall senior Amy Welu was named all-conference honorable mention.

Pipestone Area, which went unbeaten in conference play and was 19-3 overall, led the SWC with five all-conference players.

Pipestone Area: Tasia Woelber, Tiffany Woelber, Paige Petersen, Amanda Haupert, Kelly Nettik.

Redwood Valley: Ashley Bunting.

Windom Area: Sami Petersen.

Worthington: K.C. Riley.
