Drake records ace on Day 1 of SMSU Golf Classic at MGC
The 28th annual David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic began Friday with an 18-hole, five-person scramble at Marshall Golf Club. The two-day event, which will conclude today with another tournament at Tyler Golf Club, is sponsored by the Mustangs Booster Club in an effort to raise money for the SMSU athletic scholarship fund.
Chad Drake had one of the highlights of the day, recording a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth hole.
In team play, the fivesome of Tom McLaughlin, Doug Krogen, CJ Haukom, Tim Deutz and Chad Michelson won the Championship Flight with a score of 52. Mike Schultz, Troy Womack, Tom Pickering, Dan VanHauwaert and Matt Janning were a stroke back in second.
Two teams tied for the win in the First Flight with a score of 58. The team of Brad Engebretson, Jason Clarin, Steve Kruger, Fred Thurman and David Drown tied the team of Bob Jacobson, Jill Vrooman, Al Novotny, Phil Hawthorne and Joe Salamony.
Winning the Second Flight with a score of 62 was Matt Bauer, Jason Boerboom, Chad Andreas, Amber Gossen and Chris Arndorfer.
The second leg of the SMSU Golf Classic takes place today at Tyler Golf Club, with an 18-hole scramble beginning at 10 a.m.
