Mudcats lose lead late against St. Cloud Chutes
The Marshall Mudcats played five great innings of baseball against the St. Cloud Chutes, comprised of players from St. Cloud Cathedral High School, at the St. Cloud Legion tournament on Friday. Unfortunately, the game lasted seven innings as a rough first and costly seventh inning resulted in an 8-7 loss for Marshall.
St. Cloud plated three runs off of Marshall starter Conner Mesman in the first inning, but Mesman found a groove as the Mudcats worked their way back into the game.
The Mudcats got on the board with a lone run in the fourth, and St. Cloud got it back in the fifth. Leo Zerr produced a two-RBI single in the sixth, however, as Mudcats scored three runs to tie the game 4-4.
The Chutes replied with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to regain the lead, but a resilient Marshall team rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh.
Jared Holland singled in a pair of runs, part of a 2-for-4 day, as the Mudcats grabbed a 7-6 lead.
St. Cloud had another answer and scored two more runs, including the game winner on one of two Marshall errors for the game, to claim the 8-7 victory.
After walking 14 batters in Thursday’s loss to Willmar, the Mudcats issued just one free pass on the day. Mesman, who went the distance and took the loss, did surrender 11 hits in the game.
The Mudcats (3-7 overall) had seven hits of their own, but struck out nine times for the game and saw their losing streak extend to five games. Marshall will have two games in St. Cloud today to try and end the streak, weather permitting. First up is Nisswa at 5:30 p.m. before facing off against Ely at 8 p.m.
