Balaton man killed in crash

A Balaton man was killed in a head-on crash west of Windom, shortly after 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Jason Steffes, 39, of Balaton was found dead at the scene of the two-vehicle crash, State Patrol said. Steffes was traveling west on Minnesota Highway 62 when his Ford Taurus and a Ford Super-Duty pickup driven by 24-year-old Cody Falk of St. James collided, Patrol said.

The vehicles collided head-on in the westbound lane, State Patrol said.

Steffes was wearing his seat belt, Patrol said.

Falk and the passenger in his vehicle, 20-year-old Nathan Gisch of Mountain Lake, were taken to the hospital in Windom with non-life threatening injuries, State Patrol said.

Both the 2008 Taurus and 2011 pickup were destroyed, State Patrol said.

The Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office, Windom Police, Windom Ambulance, Windom Fire Department, Heron Lake Fire Department and MnDOT assisted State Patrol at the scene.
