Orange falls in tourney opener

Marshall VFW Orange dropped its opening game of the Marshall VFW baseball tournament 11-5 to Worthington on Friday at Southwest Minnesota State University’s Alumni Field.

Worthington scored three runs in the first inning and led throughout. Nick Russell picked up the win, tossing four plus innings. Lance Drooger relieved Russell and shut down the Orange bats.

Jacob Deines started and took the loss for Orange, though Blaise Andries allowed seven runs in three innings of relief.

Andries, however, knocked in two of Orange’s five runs for the game, while teammate Thomas Fischer had Marshall’s only extra-base hit with a double.

Orange returns to tournament action today for a pair of games at Alumni Field. Marshall opens up with Sioux Falls East (S.D.) at 9 a.m. before taking on Alexandria in the nightcap at SMSU.
