SMSU nabs NSIC sporstmanship award
Southwest Minnesota State University was named winner of the 2012-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Sportsmanship Award Wednesday evening at the annual NSIC Hall of Fame Banquet in St. Cloud. It is the first time that SMSU has been presented with the award.
The award was presented by NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond to SMSU director of athletics Chris Hmielewski; also in attendance for the Mustangs were SMSU president Dr. Connie Gores, assistant athletics director Rolly Muller and athletic communications director Kelly Loft.
SMSU is one of just five institutions to receive the distinct honor. Since its inception in 2008, only Northern State (2007-08), Bemidji State (2008-09 and 2010-11) the University of Mary (2009-10) and Wayne State (2011-12) have received the honor.
“We are honored to receive the NSIC Sportsmanship award. It takes a team effort to be honored by your peers in this fashion,” Hmielewski said. “I would like to thank our coaches, staff members, administrators and especially our student athletes for their hard work and determination to compete and represent our institution at a high level.”
