Clarifying his stance on wheelage tax

To the editor:

I am writing to clarify information printed in the Marshall Independent on July 10, 2013, regarding the Yellow Medicine County Board of Commissioners and their action concerning the option to impose a wheelage tax on county constituents. Please note that they did NOT vote to pass a new tax, but instead there were three commissioners voting AGAINST.

Commissioner Louis Sherlin, from District 5 (representing the Canby area) voted against the measure, along with commissioners Berends and Johnson. In a statement by Commissioner Sherlin, he noted that he felt “this is just another tax scheme by the state. It’s time to put our foot down and say no.”

Thank you.

Peggy Heglund,

Yellow Medicine County
