Minneota 3, Jackson 2

The Minneota Mudhens scored three runs in the top of the seventh, then got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 3-2 upset win over the Jackson Bulls Wednesday in a First Nite/Gopher League playoff game in Jackson.

The win gives Minneota, the seventh seed in the tournament, a 1-0 lead over No. 2 Jackson in the best-of-three series. Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. Friday in Minneota.

Wednesday’s game was scoreless through six innings before Minneota struck for three runs in the seventh. Jesus Macias hit a double to start a two-out rally and Justin Greenwood was intentionally walked. Tony Shaikoski followed with a single to score Macias, and after a walk to Beau Buysse, Tyson Sonnenburg came through with a clutch two-run single to center.

Jackson responded with two runs in the eighth inning and posed a strong threat to tie or take the lead by loading the bases with no outs. Reliever Matt Musser and the Mudhens managed to escape unscathed, however. Musser got a strikeout, then Minneota got a force out at home plate before Austin Buysse tagged a runner out at third base to end the game and seal the win.

Danny Hennen got the start for the Mudhens and pitched seven strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Musser went the last two innings, allowing one hit with two walks and a strikeout.

Along with what turned out to be the game-winning hit, Sonnenburg also had two diving catches in the outfield.
