CANBY – Services for Mavis Qualley, 83, of Canby will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Canby City Cemetery. Arrangements are with Birk Funeral Home of Canby. Mavis’s family prefers memorials be directed to a charity of their choice.

She died Monday, July 22, 2013, at the Sanford Canby Medical Center.

Mavis Mardell (Mohn) Christianson Qualley was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Minneota to Kenneth and Leona (Knutson) Mohn. She was homecoming queen and graduated from Canby High School in 1947. Mavis married her high school sweetheart Joel Ardell Christianson in Canby on Sept. 11, 1949. Together they lived in Canby and raised their three daughters on the Ci-Nan-K Farm. Joel passed away suddenly in 1986. Mavis married John “Bud” Qualley on Dec. 26, 1992. They enjoyed traveling and spending time at their home in Arizona.

Mavis was employed at Nordquist Furniture Store for over 20 years. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where she taught Release Time, sang in the choir, and participated in Circle. Her enjoyments in life included music, reading, gardening, shopping and more shopping and attending her grandchildren’s activities; however, her faith and family were her greatest joys.

She is survived by her sister: Lao Semler of Appleton, Minn.; three daughters and their husbands: Cindy and Jim Hiedeman of Canby, Nancy Jo and Patrick Popowski of Watertown, S.D., and Kaye and Murray Anderson of Virginia, Minn.; stepchildren: Kay Qualley, Phil and Juanita Qualley; her sisters-in-law: Mary Christianson, Lois Dahl, Vivian Miller, Joyce “Kitty” Helgeson, and Jean Johnson; brother-in-law James Slater; and her grandchildren: Amy Hiedeman, Anna and Jon Fischer and their children, Hailee and Cambell, Allyson and Mark Pesek and their children, Mya and Mak, Brian Hiedeman, Jimmy Hiedeman, Joseph Hiedeman, Stephanie Jo and John Dahl and their children, Madeline Jo and Andrew, Timothy and Colleen Popowski and their children, Parker and Taylor, Matthew and Nicole Anderson, Nathan Anderson and special friend, Brynn, and Adam Carlson; several nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joel A. Christianson; husband John “Bud” E. Qualley; sisters and brothers-in-law: John and Phyllis Christianson, Jerome Christianson, Irene Slater, Jim Bly, Arne Dahl, Doug Miller, and Lynn Semler; nephew and godson Tom Bly and his son Steven Bly.

Mother, when thoughts of you are in our hearts, we are never far from home.
