Tradition-rich Aebleskiver Days begins Friday in Tyler

Aebleskiver Days is back in Tyler for the weekend.

“Activities start on Friday with the golf tournament, which is already full. Most of what we do is on Saturday,” Greg Peter, member of the Aebleskiver Days committee, said.

“We coordinate the activities for the weekend, but there are committees that have to plan all of the events. It takes a whole bunch of people to come together to make this happen,” Peter said.

Aebleskiver Days is steeped in tradition. All but the pony rides are events that have been a part of the celebration for years.

“Wednesday begins the wooden aebleskiver hunt. We will give out the first clue, and each day the clues will get easier and easier until someone finds it,” Peter said.

Whoever finds the wooden aebleskiver first can turn it in for $50 worth of chamber bucks.

Saturday is when most of the activities take place.

“One fun event is the Junior Olympics. There are all kinds of games for kids age zero through 10. They start at 10 a.m.,” Peter said.

“There really is something to do all day long. The cool thing about Aebleskiver Days is that we highlight the Danish traditions. The Danebod campus has buildings that are beautifully restored. There are Danish crafts, pastries and activities going on all day. Tours are available, and it really is a unique experience,” Peter added.

The parade takes place at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.

“We usually have a well-attended parade. There are upwards of 125 to 150 entries. There are many fun groups brought in like the RTR Drumline,” Peter said. “We look forward to having a good time.”
