Milroy Yankees claim Corn Belt tournament title
The Milroy Yankees backed up their regular season league title by clinching the Corn Belt League tournament championship with a 10-5 win over Bird Island Sunday in Milroy.
The victory served as a bit of retribution for the Yankees, who opened the double-elimination tournament with a 9-2 loss to Bird Island July 17 and had to battle their way back through the losers’ bracket. A 6-5 Milroy win over Bird Island Friday night set up a decisive third game between the two teams this postseason, and the Yankees were up to task.
An eight-run third inning proved to be the difference for the Yankees, who held Bird Island scoreless over the first six innings. Milroy outhit the Bullfrogs 16-8 for the game.
Anthony Rohlik worked the first 7 1/3 innings for Milroy, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Matt Bauer closed it out, pitching a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.
Bauer also had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double. Milroy’s Dave Schmidt also went 3-for-5 with a double, driving in four runs for the game.
Brian Dolan was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs for the Yankees, while Dean Zwach added a 2-for-3 effort.
Milroy (18-5 overall) now advances to the Region 11C tournament, which begins Friday in Cold Spring. The Yankees will open the eight-team, double-elimination tournament against the Kimball Express. The top three teams from the region move on to the state tournament.
