Yankees win ugly in 1st game of 11C tournament

It certainly wasn’t pretty, but the Milroy Yankees did enough to make it through their first game of the Region 11C playoffs with a 3-1 win over Kimball Friday night in Cold Spring.

The Yankees committed four errors in the game, and the two runs that put them in front in the bottom of the eighth inning were scored on an error by the Express.

Nevertheless, Milroy (19-5 overall) is through to the next round and will play the winner of today’s game between Luxemburg and Watkins Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Cold Spring. The top three teams who emerge from the 12-team tournament advance to the Class C state tournament.

A solid pitching effort helped keep Milroy in position to win Friday. Josh Hadley got the start and pitched into the seventh inning, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Mahlon Zimmermann worked three innings, allowing no hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Milroy had just four hits of its own. The Yankees took an early lead with a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Micah Gronli, and after Kimball tied the game in the fifth, Milroy went back on top with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Matt Bauer opened the inning with a double and Kimball’s pitcher hit the next two batters. Zimmermann then hit a chopper that bounced off an infielder’s chest and into the outfield, allowing two Milroy runners to score.
