BELLEVUE, Neb. – Services for Dr. Dale Richard Sparling, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, S.D.
He died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Bellevue Hospital in Bellevue, Neb.
Dale R. Sparling was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Bad Axe, Mich., the son of Mervin and Bessie (Taylor) Sparling. Dale was raised in Bay City, Mich., and attended college in Michigan and Wyoming earning his masters in geology. He then attended Ohio State University where he received his doctorate in geology.
On Sept. 13, 1958, Dale and Jane (Stoudt) Sparling were married in Royal Oak, Mich. They lived in Venezuela, Ohio and Indiana before moving to Marshall in 1968 where they settled down to raise their three daughters. Dale was a professor at Southwest State University, retiring in 1995. Dale was a paleontologist outside of work and very much enjoyed the research and writing associated with this profession. After retirement he would spend every summer at the lake home he and his wife built on Lake Clitherall. They retired to Brookings, S.D., in 1999 where they remained until moving to Nebraska in May, 2012.
Survivors include his wife Jane; daughters Linda Sparling of Minneapolis, Patty (and Tim) Stewart of Nebraska City, Neb., Cindy (and Mike) Tobin of Cartersville, Ga; grandsons John and Christopher Brandt, Derek, Adam and Corey Tobin; and great-grandson Levi Brandt.
