Long Sox take top seed from Region 2C

The Lamberton Long Sox went 2-0 on the weekend to earn Region 2C’s top seed for the Class C amateur baseball state tournament.

Johnny Pistulka struck out nine, allowing one run in a 2-1 win over the Springfield Tigers on Saturday in Springfield. Pistulka held the Tigers scoreless over the final eight innings en route to the complete game victory.

Tyler Reiner was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Long Sox. Mike Wotschke went 2-for-3 and drove in the eventual game-winning run on an RBI squeeze bunt in the top of the second inning.

Jason Nachreiner started and took the loss for Springfield, while Brandon Wilhelmi threw the final four innings for the Tigers.

On Sunday the Long Sox returned home and held off a late rally by the Sleepy Eye Indians to emerge with a 7-5 victory.

The Long Sox jumped out to a 5-0 lead off of Sleepy Eye starter Kyle Pinke, adding insurance runs in the seventh and the eighth.

Donal Strand was 2-for-5 with a double and triple for Lamberton, while Pistulka went 3-for-4 at the plate on Sunday.

Shane Schoborg picked up the win for the Long Sox (25-10 overall). Sam Carlson, who relieved Schoborg with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, picked up the save after working out of the jam and hurling a scoreless ninth as well.

Lamberton does not play its first game of the state tournament, hosted by Maple Lake, until Aug. 24 and its opponent is yet to be determined.
