Here’s a thought for Aug. 30

Albright United Methodist Church

I heard a story about a mother who telephoned to have a taxi sent to her home. When the cab arrived, the woman brought out three young children and instructed them to get into the cab. She told the driver to put the meter on and that she would return in a few minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting, the cab driver didn’t know what to do. But then the woman appeared and asked what she owed. Puzzled, the driver asked if she was going anyplace. She replied, “No, I had some phone calls to make and needed some peace and quiet.”

Peace and quiet. That’s what all of us need from time to time. We need a time of rest from daily pressures and responsibilities. We need an escape from interruptions and noise. For many people, it seems peace and quiet are a luxury – an infrequent respite from a frantic world.

But just because this world moves at a frantic pace, it doesn’t mean we must do the same. That’s easier said than done, however, as we get caught up in meetings, appointments, work, family obligations and the stress of life. We sometimes forget about God as we struggle to get things done in time. And in the end, we wonder where all our time went.

So how do we find quiet time? Just as Jesus told his disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest,” (Mark 6:31 NIV) we, too, need to do the same. Perhaps we need to reserve some quiet time first thing in the morning so we can focus our lives and mediate on God’s word. Or maybe we need to take a break at noon for more than just lunch and experience some food for the soul. God has given us the time, but it’s up to us to find our own quiet moments.

Quiet time spent with God can be our best moments of each day as we offer ourselves and time to God for direction and guidance. Both our bodies and spirits need the peace that only God can provide.

So come away by yourself and be refreshed by the love, encouragement and power that comes from no other source. When you do, God will provide strength for the day and the peace and quiet you need, no matter how busy you are.
