Mama’s, Barrels &?Arrows take softball titles

Gambler/Valley Discount Liquor forced a winner-take-all championship game in the Gold League Tournament, but Mama’s preserved its title with a 12-11 decision Wednesday.

Gambler defeated Borch’s 18-13 in a consolation game to advance in the double elimination-style tournament. Despite Borch’s nine-run fifth inning, Gambler, which clung to a 14-11 lead after five frames, outscored Borch’s 4-2 in the seventh inning to seal its victory.

For Gambler to have a shot at winning the tournament title, it had to defeat Mama’s twice.

The first game went to Gambler by a 24-10 margin, which was sparked by a five-run first, an eight-run third, a six-run fourth and a five-run fifth. Mama’s answered with a three-run first, a one-run second, a one-run third and a five-run fourth.

Mama’s secured its tournament championship during a 12-11 decision against Gambler by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh.

It looked like Mama’s wouldn’t have any trouble winning its title after building a 9-0 lead after four innings. However, Gambler scored eight times in the fifth and took an 11-9 lead in the top of the sixth after scoring three times. Mama’s trimmed its deficit to 11-10 with a sixth-inning run before adding the winning runs in the seventh.

Mama’s, which also won the regular season championship, finished with a 19-3 record. Gambler, the Gold League’s fourth-place team in the regular season, went 14-11 this season.
