9/11 promotion backfires
THUMBS DOWN: At least the golf course owner in Wisconsin knew enough to apologize after his 9/11 ad ruffled feathers. Then again, death threats have a way of making someone think twice. Tumbledown Trails Golf Course near Madison, Wis., advertised nine holes of golf for $9.11 to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The special was intended to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. The owner of the course, who “thought people would appreciate” the special, is keeping the club open despite receiving death threats. The discount – which also included 18 holes for $19.11 was good for Wednesday, Sept. 11, only. The owner didn’t mean any harm, but we’re taken aback by the fact that the negative reaction he got actually surprised him. Also surprising is this promotion has been going on for a couple years, but since the ad this year circulated on social media, the flood of negativity became more ferocious than it normally would have. That is not surprising. We’ve heard of tasteless promotions, but this one takes the cake.
This is how your honor the victims
THUMBS UP: The city of Marshall was decked out with American flags Wednesday for the 12-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Marshall’s memorial park was definitely the center of attention that day, with a number of classes taking field trips to the downtown attraction. We don’t like to be reminded of horrific events like 9/11, but we also know we can’t forget them, and the city should be proud of how it annually honors those who lost their lives 12 years ago in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon.
More water, please
THUMBS UP: We’re 100 percent behind Michelle Obama’s latest health push that encourages Americans to drink more water, but we’ll take it a step further. We urge parents to pass the habit along to their children. Instead of buying a monstrous 24-pack of soda pop for the weekend, parents should opt for a case of H20. Or when eating out, they should encourage their kids to order water instead of a large pop (saves you money, too). We know it probably wouldn’t go over well to begin with since little kids love pop, but what better time to start developing the habit than when they’re young? We’re not saying parents should make their kids pledge to never drink pop again, but if you take baby steps on this one, maybe kids will learn that it’s better to wash food down with cold water than it is with corn syrup and sugar.
