PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Marshall sweeps at Canby
CANBY – The Marshall cross country team dominated the Canby Invitational, claiming both the boys and girls team titles ahead of Canby/Minneota/ Lincoln HI, which finished second.
“From our home meet, we were tied with Canby and won on a tie-breaker. So, we were thinking this would be a very close meet, since there were only four teams for the varsity race,” Marshall boys cross country head coach Brian Leibfried said.
The Tigers stepped up to the challenge, earning their first perfect score of the season with 15 points.
Andrew Bell led the pack with an impressive finishing time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds, followed by teammate Blaine Moran (17:21). The top five included Marshall’s Mike Larson (17:37), Wade DeAustin (17:39) and Chase VanKeulen (17:55).
“We knew it was going to be very tight. So, we encouraged our No. 3-4-5 runners, told them where they needed to be for us to pull out a win. They stepped it up beyond what we expected,”Liebfried said.
Canby/Minneota/Lincoln Hi boys earned second place behind a strong sixth-place finish by McKinley Johansen. Also in the top ten for the Lancers were Wyatt Johansen (18:02) in eighth, Josue Leos (18:02) in ninth and Travis Dinius (18:09) in tenth.
The Marshall girls team ran past C/M/L and Murray County Central for first place with 18 team points.
Marshall’s Claire Boersma ran away from the competition with the winning time of 15:05. She was 19 seconds ahead of the pack. In 2012, Boersma completed the Camby Invitational after posting a time of 16:20.
Nichole Sample (15:24), who took second for the Tigers, shaved 21 seconds off her 2012 time. Teammates Morgan Radel (15:47) and Jackie Turner (15:54) took fourth and fifth, respectively.
“Its a driven group of girls who are all shooting for seven spots,” Marshall girls cross country head coach Marie Sample said, “They are all good kids and they are working hard and having fun.”
Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI’s Leah Jessen spoiled Marshall’s shot at a perfect score with her third-place finish of 15:41. The Lancers also had top-ten finishes from Natalie Dinius (16:06), who placing seventh, and Emily Gillingham (16:21), who placed eighth.
Marshall runs again at Buffalo on Sept. 26.
“Up there, we will pretty much see the section because it’s more of a pre-section meet,” Leibfried said. “We have the chance to see where we stack up.”
