PREP VOLLEYBALL: Tigers come up big in Day 1 of Apple Valley Invitational

The Marshall volleyball team made a resounding statement Friday night at the Apple Valley High School Eagle Invitational.

After defeating Bemidji in the first match, the Tigers faced off against Lakeville North and came out on top, advancing to today’s championship bracket.

“We knew we would play four quality opponents regardless of who we are matched up against,” said Marshall head coach Dan Westby. “I think our kids were looking forward to the opportunity to play Lakeville North again.”

Marshall swept both teams, defeating the Lumberjacks 25-16, 25-20, and the Panthers 25-19, 25-18.

The Tigers got a fast start against Bemidji in the first match. Kenzie Beekman notched 17 kills to go with her 8-for-8 serving performance. Lexi Saugstad was 13-for-13 with an ace serving to go with nine digs. Callie Graff came away with four kills and two ace serves while going 10-of-12 from the line

“We really came out and played well early in that one,” Westby said. “Getting off to a good start hasn’t always been the case as of late, so it was good to see us jump out early.”

Marshall faced Lakeville North in the second match, a team they have had limited success against as of late.

“It was a great effort by our kids,” said Westby. “We’ve lost to them the last two times we’ve played them. I think our kids had some added focus there.”

The Tigers were able to withstand several Panther runs to come away with the two-game sweep.

“There were a couple stretches where they made runs, but our kids refocused,” Westby said. “They really played with resolve. It’s the hardest I’ve seen a Marshall team play in some time. That was a great effort by our kids.”

Graff went 16-for-18 with an ace serving in the win. Rachel Sanow recorded 21 of her 49 set assists against Lakeville North and Hannah Bennett had 12 of her 20 digs in the win.

Marshall will face Blaine in the championship bracket starting at 10:45 a.m. today.

“We had a chance to watch them a little bit. They have a lot of size, and that will be a challenge for us,” said Westby. “Hopefully we’ll have a lot of momentum heading into the morning.”
