PREP FOOTBALL: Quick start for Marshall

WORTHTINGTON – A 90-minute lightning delay didn’t slow the Marshall football team, which came withstood the weather and Worthington to come away with the 33-7 win Friday night in Southwest Conference play.

“We knew weather was going to be a possibility, said Marshall head coach Terry Bahlmann. “We wanted to score quickly, do things right right away.”

The Tigers scored twice in the first quarter on a 23-yard run from Sam Marshall and a one-yard keeper by Brad Bahlmann. Marshall added a two-point conversion run to his touchdown, giving Marshall a 14-0 lead.

“I thought our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage,” Bahlmann said. “We were able to use our run game up inside a lot.”

Marshall’s two second quarter touchdowns came over 90 minutes apart with the weather delay. Jack Bock went two yards early in the quarter for the touchdown and with 23 seconds left in the half, Bahlmann connected with Marshall on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Paul Citrowske added the extra point to make it a 27-0 game at the half.

“It was a long break,” said Bahlmann. “There was 4:01 on the clock (after the delay) and we drove down and scored with 23 seconds left. That sort of put the game on ice.”

Sam Marshall broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to put the Tigers up 33-0, but the Trojans broke up the shutout when Robert Lovan broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown, but Marshall held on for the 33-7 win.

“We were able to break a sweep to the outside,” Bahlmann said. “Sam made the corner miss and took it to the house.”

The Tigers will be in action again next Friday when they travel to Redwood Falls to take on Redwood Valley in a conference match-up.

“I thought we played physical on both sides of the ball,” said Bahlmann. “I thought we ran the ball hard.”
