Boulder memory care facility to open in March
MARSHALL – Responding to a growing need in the community, Boulder Estates Congregate and Assisted Living will soon have a companion facility, Boulder Creek, which will accommodate those needing memory care.
Boulder Creek Assisted Living for memory care broke ground on Village Drive across the street from Boulder Estates in May and is expected to be completed in March 2014, said Jim Knudson, the executive director.
“We’re excited about the project,” Knudson said. “I can’t wait for it to open.”
Knudson said he liked how the new facility not only will accommodate the physical and emotional needs of its clients, but will be there for the clients’ family as well.
“We’ll focus not just on the physical needs of the person, but the social aspect as well, and we will be there for the spouse or children, too,” he said.
Knudson said Boulder Estates had a long waiting list for people needing care for Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Boulder Creek was planned so people could continue with a place they can trust.
“They hate to move their mom or dad,” he said.
Jamie Enger Lanners, the tenant services manager for Boulder, will be the housing manager for Boulder Creek. She has completed her credentials in dementia care and is working on her master’s degree in health care management.
Knudson and Enger Lanners said the idea for the new facility has been in the works for about 10 years.
“It’s been carefully thought through and researched,” Enger Lanners said.
Boulder Estates has 125 apartments – 77 in the congregate section and 48 assisted living. Boulder Creek will have 31 apartments. The facility will be comprised of two “neighborhoods” which include private rooms with bathrooms, a hair salon, an on-site therapy program, kitchen, dining room, chapel and sitting area. The residential wings overlook a fenced-in courtyard.
The facility has an “intimate setting – it’s not too big because that can be overwhelming,” Enger Lanners said.
Enger Lanners said a booklet called “Family Moments” has been provided for families which includes what to expect with loved ones who have Alzheimer’s and how to make visiting easier. It includes a personal history questionnaire which will help the staff get to know the loved one.
“People have said it’s a great resource,” she said.
Knudson said Boulder Creek is locally owned, by the Robert Carr company, as is Hill Street Place and Boulder Estates.
“The owners know southwestern Minnesota and Marshall,” he said.
Boulder Estates was built in 1998 and has been added to twice, once in 2003 and again in 2004. With the Boulder Creek property, Knudson said, the potential is there to add on to that as well depending on what the needs are.
