NCAA WRESTLING: Mustangs fall in home opener
MARSHALL – Concordia College took the first five bouts by decision to build a 15-0 lead that Southwest Minnesota State could not overcome during the Mustangs’ first dual Wednesday at P.E. Gym.
The 18-15 decision was only the second time SMSU has lost to Concordia College in nine all-time bouts.
“I felt like we were not ready to go,” Mustangs head coach Jesse Nelson said. “It was Concordia that was setting the pace, especially in the early bouts. They made a statement by beating us to the punch.”
SMSU attempted a late comeback by scoring 15 of the final 18 match points.
Kyle Begin got the Mustangs on the board and cut the Cobber lead in half in just 42 second with his pin of Jake Krogstad at 165 pounds. The pin was Begin’s second of the season.
Jacob Begin followed with a 10-5 decision at 174 pounds to cut further into the Cobber lead.
Micah Larson, whose overtime takedown was enough to turn back Delson Saintal at 197 pounds cut Concordia College’s lead to 18-12 with one bout remaining.
At 285, Cole Wilson fought hard to earn a 3-2 decision against Cody Kasprick, but the Mustangs needed a pinfall and fell three points short.
“The guys in our upper weight classes came to wrestle (Wednesday),”?Nelson said. “I can’t say enough about Cole Wilson, who is back in our lineup from a knee injury. He is showing great leadership. The Begin brothers were solid for us and Michah Larson worked into to overtime to get us a victory.”
SMSU returns to action Saturday at the Cobber Open hosted by the Cobbers in Moorhead. Action begins at 9 a.m.
