GIRLS HOCKEY: Third-period goals sink Tigers

FAIRMONT – Taylor Nuss and Logyn Cone scored third-period goals as Fairmont Area slipped past Marshall in the season-opening game for both teams Thursday.

Nuss and Cone both finished with two goals and an assist, helping the Cardinals improve to 1-0 this season.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, Marshall (0-1 overall) scored four times in the second session.

Lizzie Archbold, Bailey Archbold, Miranda Fischer and Teegan Wyffels all lit the lamp with goals as the Tigers forced a 4-all tie heading into the third period.

Archbold’s goal came a the 1:13 mark and was assisted by Alysia Rupp. After Nuss scored her first goal and Kelsy Junkermeier produced a goal to make it 4-1 Fairmont Area, Marshall erupted to record the final three goals of the period.

Bailey Archbold scored on assists from Fischer and Lizzie Archbold at the 7:03 mark. Third seconds later, Fischer scored on an assist from Wyffels at the 7:33 mark. Then, Wyffels scored off a pass from Sara Antony at the 12:56 mark.

For Bailey Archbold and Wyffels, their goals were the first ones they have scored at the varsity level.

Cone and Brooke Lemon made it 2-0 Cardinals with first-peiord goals.

MHS goaltender Sierra Wagner faced 43 shots and stopped 37 of them.

Marshall is back in action at 7 p.m. today, when the Tigers travel to play at Hutchinson.
