BOYS HOCKEY: Cowger, Adams lift Hutchinson over Marshall

MARSHALL – The Marshall Tigers boys hockey team fell to 1-3 overall after a 4-1 non-conference loss to the Hutchinson Tigers on Saturday at Lockwood Motors Ice Arena.

A three-goal third period lifted Hutchinson to the victory. Tory Adams scored before Matthew Cowger completed a hat trick by scoring twice during the last 17 minutes.

Adams made it 2-1 on a pass from Alec Maher just 53 seconds into the final period. Then, Cowger used a pass from Matt Sandeen to put Hutchinson ahead 3-1 with 10:17 left. Cowger scored an unassisted empty net goal with 18 seconds remaining for the hat trick.

Hutchinson grabbed a 1-0 lead on the first goal from Cowger, who was assisted by Adams and Keegan Maceman with 12:30 left in the first period.

Marshall tied the score at 1-1 in the second period, when Derek Rasmussen produced a goal on a pass from Blaine Moran at the 11:16 mark.

Marshall goaltender Mason Campion made 36 saves on 39 Hutchinson shots on-goal. Hutchinson’s Zach Allen had 17 saves on 18 Marshall shots on-goal.

The game featured 17 penalties, 10 of which were charged to Marshall. Despite 11 combined power plays in the game, Hutchinson went 0 of 7 with an extra attacker and Marshall was 0 of 4.
