BOYS HOCKEY: Campion makes 33 saves during Marshall defeat

WILLMAR – Marshall goaltender Mason Campion stopped 33 of 36 shots during the Tigers’ 3-1 non-conference loss Saturday at Willmar.

The Cardinals’ Austin Smith and Joey Lee scored the final two goals of the game.

Smith broke a 1-1 tie with two seconds remaining in the first period, scoring a goal that was assisted by Evan VanDenEinde and Ryan Woltjer.

After a scoreless second period, Lee sent a shot past Campion with 1:08 left. Trey Tollefson assisted Lee’s goal, which provided the Cardinals with insurance.

Willmar grabbed a 1-0 lead on Tyler Pendill’s first-period goal at the 10:58 mark. Isaac Kobienia set up Pendill on the play.

The Tigers used a power-play goal from Alex Buysse to tie the score 1-1 with 7:23 left in the first period. He was assisted by Blaine Moran and Brent Haukom.

Willmar outshot Marshall 36-12 in the game, including 12-0 in the third period and 26-7 during the final two periods.

The Tigers received six power-play opportunities, but could only score on one of them. The Cardinals were 0 of 2 on their power play.

Willmar goaltender Levi Grossman, had 11 saves.

At 7 p.m. Friday, Marshall (3-4-0 overall) travels to play St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson/Tri City United.
