BOYS HOCKEY: Marshall defeats Winona with late tally

BLAINE – Derek Rasmussen scored the game-winning goal as Marshall defeated Winona 3-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Schwan Cup Open Division Tournament on Thursday at Schwan’s Super Rink.

With the game tied 2-2, Rasmussen’s shot beat Winhawks goaltender Cassidy Cyert as two minutes, 13 seconds remained in the game. The goal was set up by passes from Blaine Moran and Taylor Rasmussen.

For Derek Rasmussen, it was his second goal of the game.

Winona took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal from Ethan Vieth, who scored after he took a pass from Lucas Schultz just 2:15 into the game.

Trailing 1-0 after 17 minutes, Derek Rasmussen tied the contest 1-1 with an unassisted tally 2:17 into the second period. Then, Marshall grabbed a 2-1 lead on a goal from Taylor Pickthorn, who was assisted by Brent Haukom less than four minutes later.

The Winhawks forced a 2-2 tie on a third-period goal from Ivan Kovala with 9:39 left. He was set up with a pass from Michael Lubahn.

Both teams went 0 of 2 on power-play opportunities. The game was played with only eight minutes in penalties being recorded.

The Tigers won the battle for shots on-goal 37-22, outshooting Winona in every period (11-8 in the first, 13-6 in the second and 13-8 in the third).

Mason Campion was the winning goaltender after making 20 saves on 22 shots. Cyert, who took the loss, stopped 34 pucks on 37 shots.

Marshall advanced to the championship semifinal round, where the Tigers (4-5-0 overall) will face Bloomington Kennedy at 8 p.m. today.

Kennedy (4-5-1) defeated Irondale 5-1 in its quarterfinal match Thursday.
