MARSHALL – Southwest Minnesota State took all 10 bouts to blank Minot State 40-0 on Saturday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual at P.E. Gym.

It was the Mustangs’ first shutout since the 1991-92 season and first win in conference play this season. SMSU (4-2 overall, 1-0 NSIC) defeated Minot State 44-3 last season. The Beavers are 0-6 overall and 0-3 against NSIC this year.

“We have new expectations coming into the second half of the season. Our guys started it out right and we’re looking forward to getting better,” Mustangs head coach Jesse Nelson said.

Saturday’s dual was the first for SMSU in nearly a month. The Mustangs defeated St. John’s 22-13 on Dec. 14, 2013.

“We have this long break every year and the guys should be used to it,” Nelson said. “We had been banged up coming into the break and I think the time off worked to our benefit.”

It certainly did.

Southwest Minnesota State received two bonus point-victories from Ethan Hildebrandt (8-10 at 141 pounds) and No. 8-ranked Jacob Begin (11-5 at 174) as both Mustangs pinned their opponents. Hildebrandt pinned Zachary Cummings in 1:27, while Begin pinned Tiger Paasch in 6:02.

Antonio Meikel (7-7 at 125) won his bout by forfeit and Beau Buysse (1-4 at 149) picked up his first win of the season with a 10-2 major decision over Jon Wilson.

No. 7-ranked Justin Reinsma (16-9 at 133), Codie Lane (8-7 at 157), Kyle Begin (14-5 at 165), Andrew Rodas (8-5 at 184), Micah Larson (13-7 at 197), and Cole Wilson (13-5 at 285) all won their bouts with decisions.

“This is the time of the season when wrestlers are looking to get better,” Reinsma said. “With school on winter break, this is a time to heal our bodies and, at the same time, get better by working out. Dual season is a fun time because we can take one match as a time and its no so much a grind on the body.”

Larson won his bout by recording four points in the last 30 seconds – a two-point reversal and a two-point near-fall – to topple Mitchell Eull.

SMSU seeks to avenge last season’s heart-breaking loss to Augustana (6-2 overall, 2-0 NSIC) on Tuesday, when the Mustangs travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to battle the Vikings.
