GIRLS BASKETBALL: Tigers seal victory with pressure, free throws

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Class 3A No. 5-ranked Marshall posted a 78-64 non-conference victory Saturday at Sioux Falls Lincoln, the defending champions in South Dakota’s Class AA.

“This was a big win for our team,” Tigers head coach Dan Westby said. “Going to (Sioux Falls Lincoln) and leading from start-to-finish is not easy to do. We really felt good about our effort. Our kids scratched-and-clawed and found a way to come out on top. We need to build on this and get ready for another challenging week this week.”

Marshall travels to Fairmont on Tuesday to take on the Cardinals in another non-conference game. On Friday, the Tigers host Sioux Falls Washington, the top-ranked team this season in South Dakota’s Class AA.

The Tigers (11-0 overall) used full-court pressure early on to take a 30-23 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Marshall sank 23 of 26 free throws, led by Sarah Buysse’s 11 of 12 effort in the fourth quarter. The Tigers hit 29 of 38 free throws overall and limited the Patriots to 11 of 13 at the free-throw line.

The Tigers collected a 31-28 edge in rebounding and were led by Bennett’s eight caroms.

“Our kids really battled hard in the second half, especially on the boards,” Westby said. “We really did a nice job of neutralizing their size advantage by blocking their kids out.”

Ellie Brecht led Lincoln in the first half as she scored 13 of the Patriots’ 23 points before intermission. She ended up with 23 markers in the game. Anna Brecht added 13 points and Emily Pierson had 11 more.
