PREP WRESTLING: Tigers earn victory over River Valley

SPRINGFIELD – Marshall/Lakeview jumped out to an early team lead and worked its way to a 51-32 win on the road Thursday against Springfield River Valley.

Nick Erbes and Wyatt Martin collected pins for the Tigers, while Devyn Martzloff won by decision. Cameron Williams, Dylan Dulas, Matt Facile, Ramzi Gregoire, Jarrett Louwagie and Brandon Appel won their matches by forfeit.

After Williams and Dulas won by forfeit, Erbes didn’t waste any time sticking his opponent, recording a pin in 56 seconds to give Marshall/Lakeview a commanding 18-0 lead.

“Nick’s wrestling solid for us right now,” Tiger head coach Justin Bouwman said. “He has been all year. He’s one of those guys that we can count on. And it just kind went from there.”

Martin took 41 seconds to pin his opponent, pushing the Tigers’ advantage to 39-4.

Wyatt has been wrestling really well for us, too,” Bouwman said. “He’s doing a lot of great things as an eighth-grader for us. He should be down a weight, but Ramzi’s there. He’s starting to figure out the speed of it and the technique that it requires now. Before, he could get away with being bigger and stronger, but now it takes some technique and he’s developing that. He’s growing with it.”

Bouwman noted that Louwagie and Appel had dropped down a weight, setting them up for more success.

“They’re stronger down there,” Bouwman said. “They were kind of over-sized and outmatched a little bit up, so now they’re down and it’s better for them. Now we’ll have the four opens at the top.”
