BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings hold off Rebels

SLAYTON – Minneota/Lincoln HI survived a late run from Murray County Central on Saturday night, winning a non-conference game 69-62 behind solid performances from Dylan Tolk and Daniel Harrison.

Tolk finished with a game-high 22 points while Harrison chipped in 16 more for the Vikings (11-3 overall).

M/LHI head coach Dave Busselman was impressed with his team’s shot selection and thought that was a key component in the win.

“Offensively, we didn’t take too many bad shots,” Busselman said. “We’ve been struggling with our shooting, but it was a lot better (Saturday) that it was (Friday).”

Busselman also thought the Vikings ran into a different kind of opponent than they are used to playing. He felt the Rebels presented more of a challenge in the area of quickness as opposed to size.

Coming into the game, he was nervous as to how his team would adjust, but was pleased with the overall effort and the changes they made.

The teams played each other fairly evenly for most of the first half before turnovers gave M/LHI easy transition baskets and allowed the Vikings to stretch their lead to 11 before halftime.

While he was pleased with the Rebels’ play late, MCC coach Tim Bobeldyk knew his team’s play early on came back to haunt them.

“We dug too big of a hole in the first half,” Bobeldyk said. “We had too many turnovers and unforced errors and it led to easy baskets for them. It was our passing. We have to do a better job of reading the defense and seeing our teammates.”

“We were trying to make these no-look passes and it wasn’t happening. A good team like Minneota is going to take advantage of that,” Bobeldyk said.

Logan Kluis led the way for the Rebels with 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting, while Grant Rohrer added 15 points to go with 13 more from Jaden Boerbom.

Minneota shot well from behind the arc, as Tolk, Austin Buysse and Jordan Beck all contributed a trio of three-pointers.

Buysse and Beck each finished with 13 points for the Vikings.

Minneota/Lincoln HI has another tough test Tuesday, when it plays at Class 1A No. 4-ranked Dawson-Boyd (13-0). MCC, which fell to 6-11 overall, hosts Edgerton (1-12) on Tuesday.
