BOYS BASKETBALL: Bluejays’ run too much for Lancers
CANBY – The Canby Lancers were feeling confident with a 37-22 lead as 1 minute, 17 seconds remained in the first half.
That was until Nick Daugherty scored the final seven points of the initial half to spark a 16-0 Central Minnesota Christian run that ultimately gave the Bluejays a 38-37 second-half lead en route to a 67-60 Camden Conference win Saturday night.
“The baskets that we were making in the first half were not falling for us in the second half and we needed to do a better job of blocking out at the defensive end,” Lancers head coach Jon Hanson said.
Daugherty led all scorers with 23 points on 8 of 16 attempts from the field and 7 of 10 attempts at the free-throw line. He drained a hook shot with 1:02 left before halftime, added an old-fashioned three-point play after scoring with a drive to the basket as 34 seconds remained and knocked down an 8-foot jumper with 13 seconds left.
After the break, Central Minnesota Christian produced the first nine points of the second half. Taylor Slagter (18 points) hit a top-of-the-key 3-pointer and Austin Bulthuis (20 points) scored a transition layup before Daugherty connected with a layup and Bulthuis put back a rebound as the Bluejays went ahead 38-37 with 13 minutes left.
A key part of the CMCS run was its ability to rebound at the offensive end. The Bluejays, who collected one and, sometimes, two offensive rebounds per possession during their scoring spree, finished with a 32-30 edge in total rebounds and a had a 12-10 advantage in offensive caroms.
Canby went 6:50 without scoring a single point.
The Lancers’ drought ended when Josh Gallegos produced a three-point play to give CHS a 40-38 lead as 12:27 remained. Gallegos (16 points, 10 rebounds) was one of four Canby players to score in double digits. Zach Nuy (18 points, nine rebounds), Kristian Leppke (13 points) and Michael Slaba (11 points) were the others.
Both teams traded baskets during the next 9 minutes before CMCS used an 8-0 run to grab a 59-51 lead. Daugherty stuck back a rebound and Slagter threw down a 10-foot jumper before Bulthuis scored a layup and drained a pair of free throws with 2 minutes left.
But the Lancers had one last surge inside them.
A layup from Nuy and a pair of layups from Gallegos cut Canby’s deficit to 61-57 as Central Minnesota Christian struggled at the free-throw line, going 2 of 6 during a stretch of 90 seconds.
The Bluejays held onto a 61-60 lead with 31 seconds remaining after Slaba drained an off-balance 3-pointer from the right corner. That attempt was the only 3-pointer the Lancers made in the second half. CHS drained four first-half 3-pointers.
Lucas VanEps sank two free throws with 20 seconds left before Slaba missed an off-balance 3-pointer at the top of the key.
Gallegos fouled out as Central Minnesota Christian (9-5 overall, 8-3 Camden North) made its final four free throws to seal its seven-point victory.
Canby (13-4 overall, 6-3 Camden South) plays at Renville County West at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
